American Doctor Killed in Sudan Had Stayed to Treat His Patients as Bombs Fell

Iowa native Bushra Ibnauf Sulieman was stabbed amid upheaval in Khartoum

When bombs started dropping near his home in Sudan’s capital Khartoum this month, Sudanese-American doctor Bushra Ibnauf Sulieman waived the promise of an escape to safety offered by his U.S. passport. Instead, Dr. Sulieman, a gastroenterologist and director of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Khartoum, stayed to look after his aging parents and patients at one of the city’s last functioning hospitals.
