For First Time in More Than 50 Years, No Ice Skating on Ottawa’s Canal

OTTAWA—Every winter for nearly four decades, Grant Hooker has pocketed tens of thousands of dollars by selling deep-fried dough topped with cinnamon and sugar, known as “Beaver Tails,” to thousands of hungry skaters on the frozen Rideau Canal. This winter, he said, sales will be easy to estimate.

“Zero,” he said.
